Reliability and accuracy come together in new chambering
EXETER, NH (January 2011) — SIG SAUER, Inc., the leading manufacturer of commercial, law enforcement and military firearms, introduces the SIG556R™ carbine, which combines the proven SIG556 gas piston operating system and the time-tested 7.62x39mm cartridge.
The first SIG556® to be offered in a caliber other than 5.56mm NATO, the SIG556R is chambered in the legendary intermediate Russian cartridge. Most often linked to the AK-series of rifles, 7.62x39mm power is now available in the very accurate, highly dependable SIG556 platform. Found the world over, the tapered cartridge sets the standard for feeding reliability under extreme conditions.
Featuring the exceptional ergonomics of SIG SAUER® rifles, the 556R uses standard AK-style magazines, offering exceptional feeding reliability. A two-stage trigger further enhances tactical accuracy.
The SIG556R features a distinctive folding and telescopic stock, and an M1913 rail for accessory attachment. The 16” barrel features four-groove rifling and a twist rate of 1:9.5”. At its full extension, the SIG556R measures 36” but can fold to 26”, making it ideal for situations where maximum maneuverability is required.
The adjustable gas system allows operators to regulate gas flow when ammunition or environmental conditions dictate additional cycling energy. For Special Forces requiring an accurate, more potent rifle, chambered in 7.62x39mm, the SIG556R sets a new standard for dependable operation and function.
